Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Podcasts have established themselves in recent years as a popular medium that connects personal narratives, societal discourse, and emotional experience of individuals. This master’s thesis explores the content of so-called deep dive podcasts in the People and Society genre, formats that take on morally ambivalent topics and have been subject to critical reflection within the media discourse of recent years. A mixed-methods research design was applied. Study 1 draws on Mayring’s qualitative content analysis to examine the types of public value conveyed through a popular German Podcast. Study 2 complements these insights with a quantitative online survey aimed at identifying the motivations that drive audiences to engage with this kind of content. The theoretical framework combines Moore’s (1995) Public Value Theory, the Uses and Gratifications Theory by Katz, Blumler, and Gurevitch (1973), and Theory of Mind (Premack & Woodruff, 1978). Findings suggest that deep dive podcasts in the People and Society genre hold potential to promote self-reflection and public dialogue, but they also raise media ethics challenges that cannot be overlooked. The thesis concludes with recommendations for podcast creators and producers to help shape the societal impact of these formats more deliberately.
