Grenzregime und Menschenrechtsverletzungen gegen Migrant:innen scheinen heute ein konstituierender Bestandteil der Europäischen Innen- und Außenpolitik zu sein. Grenzregionen sind mehr als nur Orte, an denen sich eine Grenze manifestiert, sondern eine fluide Landschaft der politischen Auseinandersetzung. Die Akteur:innen dieser Grenzregion sind Individuen, die in komplexe Interaktionen eintreten und im Diskurs mit Migrant:innen, Polizei, Aktivist:innen und vielen mehr den Raum um sie herum schaffen und transformieren. In der Region um die Italienische Grenzstadt Ventimiglia kulminieren diese Prozesse seit 2014/15 auf engstem Raum und finden in besonderer Dichte an einem Wanderpfad statt, über den seit über hundert Jahren Menschen klandestin die Grenze nach Frankreich überqueren. Die tausenden Menschen, die aus verschiedensten Motivationen über diesen sog. Passo della Morte gingen und gehen, sind aufgrund der rechtlichen Prekarität des Unterfangens schwer greifbar, hinterlassen aber seit jeher eine Flut an Spuren in Form von Objekten, Zeichen und Markierungen. Diese Dinge sind nicht nur Chronisten der Ereignisse; mehr noch: sie greifen aktiv in den Diskurs ein und nehmen Anteil an der Schaffung und Transformation des Grenzregimes, welches seinen Ausdruck besonders sichtbar im Passo della Morte findet. Die vorliegende Arbeit gründet auf insgesamt zehn Wochen teilnehmender Beobachtung, Interviews, historischer Quellenrecherche und gesammeltem visuellem Material in den Jahren 2021, 2023 und 2025. Mittels eines multi-methodischen Ansatzes soll die Rolle und Wandelbarkeit von Objekten sowie ihre Beziehungen zu menschlichen Akteur:innen behandelt werden. Besonders unter Beteiligung von Konzepten von Bruno Latour, Tim Ingold und Yael Navaro-Yashin möchte diese Forschung einen Beitrag zur sozialwissenschaftlichen Debatte um Agency, Aneignung und Teilhabe leisten.

Border regimes and human rights violations against migrants nowadays appear to be constitutive for European internal as much as foreign policy. Border regions are not to be understood as just geographical places where a border manifests itself but rather as fluid environments of political negotiation. The actors of such an environment are individuals who engage in complex interactions and hereby shape and transform the space around them. This discourse contains migrants, as well as police, activists and many more. Since 2014/15 these processes have been intensifying in the region around the Italian border town of Ventimiglia and manifest particularly along a specific hiking trail that has been used for over a hundred years by people attempting to clandestinely cross into France. Due to the precarious situation concerning repression, those thousands of people who have been walking—and are still walking today—this so-called Passo della Morte are naturally difficult to reach. Yet they have been leaving a great number of traces behind consisting of objects, signs and messages all along the trail. These things are not just narrators of the events taking place in this space, moreover they actively engage in the discourse and partake in creating and shaping of the border regime; culminating particularly visible on the Passo della Morte. This work at hand is built upon ten weeks of field research during the years of 2021, 2023 and 2025 consisting of participatory observation, interviews as much as studying written sources and collecting visual material. Employing a multi-methodical approach, it aims to engage with the variability of objects and their role in the relationship with human agents. Resorting particularly to the works of Bruno Latour, Tim Ingold and Yael Navaro-Yashin, this research seeks to contribute to the socio-scientific debate around notions of agency, appropriation and participation.
