Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
High-resolution, photorealistic textures for 3D city models are both costly to create and computationally demanding. They often rely on expensive data acquisition methods such as photogrammetry or laser scanning and can cause significant memory and performance issues, especially in close-up views. However, many applications—such as simulations, analytical visualizations, or interactive city models—do not require a fully photorealistic representation but instead demand a visually coherent and efficient texturing approach. This thesis aims to develop a workflow for the efficient texturing of 3D city models by integrating procedural façade textures into multiresolution texture atlases. Procedural textures were created in Substance Designer, organized into separate atlases for each resolution level, and applied to a sample city scene in Blender using UV mapping. The evaluation combines a qualitative visual comparison with the standard textures of the Blender‑OSM add-on and a quantitative performance analysis, including render times and memory usage. Additionally, a variant incorporating Parallax Occlusion Mapping (POM) was tested to reduce geometric complexity. The results reveal a clear pattern: in medium and distant views, the multiresolution atlases offer significant performance improvements with comparable or superior visual quality. Close-up views lead to slightly increased render times but deliver much greater detail and realism, which justifies the trade-off. POM further enhances efficiency for large scenes. Overall, the developed workflow offers a flexible solution that balances visual quality and performance. Future work may focus on extending parameterization and automating UV mapping and texture assignment.
