Infolge steigender Gästezahlen sieht sich Südtirols Tourismussektor mit zunehmenden sozialen Spannungen und ökologischen wie ökonomischen Herausforderungen konfrontiert. In Fachkreisen wird daher vermehrt die Forderung nach einer nachhaltigen Transformation des Tourismussystems artikuliert. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird aufbauend auf dem Konzept der Imaginaries untersucht, wie Personen aus dem Bereichen Tourismus, Politik und Wissenschaft eine nachhaltige Entwicklung des Südtiroler Tourismussystems imaginieren. Mittels leitfadengestützter, narrativer Interviews wurde eine Auswahl von acht Personen nach ihren Meinungen, Wünschen und Perspektiven für eine nachhaltige Transformation des Tourismus in Südtirol befragt. Die Analyse der Interviews ergab, dass die Entwicklung des Tourismus in hohem Maße von sozio-räumlichen Vorstellungen und einem kollektiven Identitätsempfinden geprägt ist. Gleichzeitig fungiert die kollektive Vorstellung eines ‚guten‘ Lebens als normativer Leitgedanke innerhalb des Entwicklungsdiskurses, während Forschung und technologische Entwicklung als angesehene Mittel zur Bewältigung einer nachhaltigen Transformation gelten. Damit wird ersichtlich, dass die Transformation des regionalen Tourismussystems maßgeblich durch Spatial Imaginaries, Sociotechnical Imaginaries und Imaginaries of Sustainability geprägt wird. Die vorliegende Forschungsarbeit trägt zur Erweiterung bestehender empirischer Ansätze zur Untersuchung touristischer Gesellschaften bei, indem sie aufzeigt, dass Imaginaries zwar implizite, aber dennoch bedeutsame Elemente innerhalb sozialer Aushandlungsprozesse über die Entwicklung von Tourismussystemen sind.

As a result of rising visitor numbers, South Tyrol's tourism sector is facing increasing social tensions and ecological and economic challenges. Experts are therefore increasingly calling for a sustainable transformation of the tourism system. Building on the concept of imaginaries, this paper examines how people from the fields of tourism, politics, and academia imagine the sustainable development of South Tyrol's tourism system. Using guided narrative interviews, a selection of eight people were interviewed about their opinions, wishes, and perspectives for a sustainable transformation of tourism in South Tyrol. Analysis of the interviews revealed that the development of tourism is largely shaped by socio-spatial ideas and a collective sense of identity. At the same time, the collective idea of a ‘good’ life functions as a normative guiding principle within the development discourse, while scientific research and technological development are regarded as respected means of achieving sustainable transformation. This shows that the transformation of the regional tourism system is significantly influenced by spatial imaginaries, sociotechnical imaginaries, and imaginaries of sustainability. This research contributes to the expansion of existing empirical approaches to the study of tourist societies by demonstrating that imaginaries are implicit but nevertheless significant elements within social negotiation processes concerning the development of tourism systems.
