Die anthropologische Studie des Lederhandwerks in Marrakesch (Marokko) zeigt, wie dieses jahrhundertealte Handwerk von einer Spannung zwischen historischer Tradition und zeitgenössischer Moderne geprägt ist. Ein zeitlicher Vergleich der Ethnographie "Les Tanneurs de Marrakech" (1971) von Danièle Jemma-Gouzon mit aktuellen empirischen Daten, die 2023/24 durch klassische ethnographische Methoden erhoben, im Rahmen des chaîne opératoire-Ansatzes analysiert und durch historische sowie archäologische Quellen ergänzt wurden, offenbart sowohl Kontinuitäten als auch Veränderungen. Diese sind beeinflusst von Globalisierung, Umwelt, sozialer Struktur und Organisation, Wirtschaft, (implizitem) Wissen und handwerklichen Fähigkeiten, Religion, politischem System, (ethnischer) Identität, kolonialen Vermächtnissen sowie der Konstruktion von Orten und Räumen. Theoretisch ist diese Masterarbeit innerhalb der Material Culture Studies und der Anthropologie der Technik verortet, zielt jedoch darauf ab, zu einer Anthropologie des Handwerks beizutragen.

The anthropological study on leather craft in Marrakech (Morocco) shows that this centuries-old craft is shaped by a constant tension between historical tradition and contemporary modernity. A temporal comparison of Danièle Jemma-Gouzon’s ethnography "Les Tanneurs de Marrakech" (1971) with contemporary empirical data collected through classic ethnographic methods in 2023/24, analyzed via the framework of the chaîne opératoire and complemented with historical and archaeological sources reveals both continuities and changes. These are shaped by globalization, environment, social structure and organization, economy, (tacit) knowledge and skills, religion, the political system, (ethnic) identity, colonial legacies, and place/space. Theoretically, this master thesis is situated within material culture studies and the anthropology of technology, but aims to contribute towards an anthropology of crafts.
