Die vorliegende Masterarbeit “Handling Plastics (‘Properly’)” thematisiert aus kultur- und sozialanthropologischer Perspektive das fluktuierende, dynamische und soziale Beziehungsverhältnis von Einwegplastikobjekten, auf welche Weise Plastikflaschen, Behältern und Sachets, sowie deren Lebenszyklen auf den Philippinen. Sie zeigt auf, wie Faktoren, wie der Ort, die mit dem Objekt Beziehung tretenden Akteur*innen, die Nutzungsmöglichkeiten sowie die sozialen, kulturellen, ökologischen und ökonomischen Kontexte mit dem Objekt selbst in Austausch kommen und dessen momentanen Wert mitbestimmen und beeinflussen. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es den Werte(wandel), die Nutzungsmöglichkeiten sowie die sozialen Praktiken und die Strategien im alltagsweltlichen Umgang mit Einwegplastik an den Orten Cebu City und Malapascua darzustellen. Die Arbeit basiert auf ethnographischer Feldforschung, die im Jahr 2023 durchgeführt wurde. Theoretisch stützt sich die Arbeit auf Mary Douglas’ Purity and Danger, Arjun Appadurais Konzepts des Social Life of Things, James Gibsons Theorie der Affordanzen, Tim Ingolds Meshwork, Jakob von Uexkülls Begriff der Umwelt, Michael Thompsons Rubbish Theory sowie Richard Waites Überlegungen zu Waste and Mass Consumption. Auf Basis eines reflexiven, situativen und qualitativen Forschungsansatzes kamen als Methoden teilnehmende Beobachtung, Leitfaden-Interviews und informelle Gespräche zum Einsatz. Die Datenerhebung wurde in Form von Feldtagebüchern, Beobachtungsprotokollen, Feldnotizen, Skizzen und Fotografien dokumentiert. Im Zuge meiner Feldforschung wurde deutlich, dass sich der Werte(wandel) von Einwegplastikobjekten kontextabhängig, zirkulär und dynamisch vollzieht. Dieser ambivalente Umgang verweist auf einen fortlaufenden Aushandlungsprozess, in dem sich ökologische Sensibilitäten, ökonomische Notwendigkeiten und kulturell gewachsene Praktiken überlagern. Der Wert eines Objekts erweist sich dabei als relational und entsteht durch die situative Verflechtung sozialer, materieller und kultureller Bedingungen. Zudem erfolgten Wiederverwertungen und Umwidmungen von Plastikobjekten zumeist aus Ressourcenknappheit heraus. Scheinbar unbrauchbare Objekte wurden entweder informell – etwa durch Verbrennung oder Ablagerung – oder formell über Müllsysteme, wie Abfallbehälter entsorgt und vernichtet. Insgesamt zeigten sich Praktiken und Strategien im Umgang mit Einwegplastik auf den Philippinen als dynamische Prozesse, in denen sich Bedeutungen, Funktionen und Ordnungen kontinuierlich verschieben und neu verhandelt werden.

The present Master’s thesis “Handling Plastics (‘Properly’)” examines, from a cultural and social anthropological perspective, the fluctuating, dynamic, and social relations of single-use plastic objects – such as bottles, containers, and sachets – and their life cycles in the Philippines. It highlights how factors such as place, the individuals interacting with the objects, their potential uses alias affordances, as well as social, cultural, ecological, and economic contexts intersect with the objects themselves, thereby shaping and influencing their situational value. The aim of this thesis is to explore value and its transformations, possible uses, as well as social practices and strategies in the everyday handling of single-use plastics in Cebu City and Malapascua. The research is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in 2023. The theoretical framework draws on Mary Douglas’ Purity and Danger, Arjun Appadurai’s concept of the Social Life of Things, James Gibson’s theory of affordances, Tim Ingold’s Meshwork, Jakob von Uexküll’s notion of Umwelt, Michael Thompson’s Rubbish Theory, and Richard Waite’s reflections on Waste and Mass Consumption. Methodologically, I employed a reflexive, situational, and qualitative research approach, combining participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and informal conversations. Data collection was documented through field diaries, observation protocols, field notes, sketches, and photographs. During my fieldwork, it became evident that the (trans)formation of value in relation to single-use plastic objects unfolds contextually, circularly, and dynamically. This ambivalent handling points to an ongoing negotiation process in which ecological sensibilities, economic necessities, and culturally embedded practices intersect. The value of an object emerges as relational, arising from the situational entanglement of social, material, and cultural conditions. Reuse and repurposing of plastic objects often stemmed from resource scarcity, while seemingly unusable items were disposed of either informally – through burning or dumping – or formally via waste management systems such as garbage bins. Overall, practices and strategies in dealing with single-use plastics in the Philippines appeared as dynamic processes in which meanings, functions, and orders are continuously shifting and renegotiated.
