Diese Masterarbeit zielt darauf ab, ein Konzept und einen Prototyp für das Darstellen von Reiseliteratur aus der Sammlung Woldan der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu erstellen. Erstens bietet die Masterarbeit eine Literaturrecherche zu den Themen von Web Mapping und Web GIS, Storytelling und Story Maps an. Die praktische Arbeit umfasst eine Evaluierung von bestehenden Story Maps, eine Softwarebewertung von GeoNode – GeoStories, ArcGIS StoryMaps und KnightLab – StoryMapJS, ein innovatives Konzept, welches dann mit einem Prototyp umgesetzt wird und schließlich eine Benutzerbeurteilung. Der Prototyp wird mit einem Reisetagebuch aus der Sammlung Woldan erstellt, welches die erste niederländische Expedition nach Ostindien in den Jahren 1595 bis 1597 aufzeichnet. Die Masterarbeit schließt mit den Ergebnissen des Prototyps und der Benutzerbeurteilung sowie mit den Änderungen in dem Entwurfsprozess, Verbesserungen und zukünftiger Arbeit ab.

This master’s thesis aims to develop a concept and prototype for showcasing travel literature from the Woldan Collection of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in an interactive and engaging web mapping application. Firstly, the thesis presents a literature review of the topics of web mapping and Web GIS, storytelling and story maps. The practical work comprises an evaluation of existing story maps, a software evaluation of GeoNode – GeoStories, ArcGIS StoryMaps and KnightLab – StoryMapJS, an innovative concept, which is then applied in a prototype and lastly, a user evaluation. The prototype is created with a nautical diary from the Woldan Collection, which records the first Dutch expedition to the East Indies in 1595-1597. The thesis concludes with the prototype and user evaluation results as well as changes in the design process, improvements and future work.
