Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This thesis explores the role of social media in political activism in Africa south of the Sahara. It focuses specifically on four prominent movements: #BringBackOurGirls (Nigeria), #FeesMustFall (South Africa), #ThisFlag (Zimbabwe) and #EndSARS (Nigeria). Examining how digital platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have been used to mobilise support, raise awareness, and exert pressure on governments and institutions, the study sheds light on the transformative power of social media in the realm of political activism. The central research questions are: (1) What is the influence of social media on political decision-making? (2) What societal transformations are linked to hashtag activism? and (3) How sustainable are these digital movements over time? The analysis is based on a qualitative methodological framework combining a literature review, detailed case studies, and a comparative analysis. The findings demonstrate that social media facilitates rapid mobilisation and visibility, frequently bringing local struggles to the attention of the international community. However, the long-term impact of such activism depends on offline engagement, structural conditions, and the ability to maintain momentum beyond viral moments. Each movement studied illustrates both the potential and the limitations of digital activism in politically complex environments, with these limitations being a result of the digital nature of activism, which makes it difficult to engage with the offline world. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of digital political participation in Africa South of the Sahara and highlights the evolving relationship between technology, activism, and state power. The research also provides recommendations for activists, scholars, and policymakers who are seeking to utilise digital platforms for social and political change.
