Die Masterarbeit untersucht das Architekturverständnis der Architektin Gabu Heindl aus kunsthistorischer Perspektive. Im Zentrum steht ihr Konzept der radikaldemokratischen Planung, das in der Publikation Stadtkonflikte (2020) dargelegt wird. Die zentrale Fragestellung ist, inwiefern Heindls Planungsansatz als radikaldemokratische Theorie gefasst werden kann und wie sich Konflikt, Partizipation und Planung als politische Kategorien innerhalb architektonischer Praxis denken und analysieren lassen. Methodisch kombiniert die Arbeit eine diskursanalytische Lektüre mit einer theoriegeleiteten Kontextualisierung und bewegt sich dabei im Spannungsfeld zwischen kritischer Planungstheorie und radikaler Demokratietheorie. Mithilfe eines entwickelten Analysemodells werden politische Planungsprozesse anhand von drei Kategorien differenziert: Konflikt ohne Partizipation, Konflikt mit Partizipation und Partizipation ohne Konflikt. Die Analyse zeigt, dass Heindl Architektur als politische Aufgabe denkt, in der Konflikt als konstitutiver Bestandteil demokratischer Planung und Partizipation als kollektive, machtvolle Praxis gewertet wird. Ebenso wird belegt, dass die Verbindung von Konflikt und Partizipation das größte demokratische Potenzial birgt. Damit liefert die Arbeit einen Beitrag zur theoretischen und praktischen Verortung von Gabu Heindls Werk und unterstreicht die Aktualität und Relevanz radikaldemokratischer Planung für gegenwärtige Diskurse in Architektur und Stadtplanung.

This master's thesis examines the architectural understanding of architect Gabu Heindl from an art historical perspective. It focuses on her concept of radical-democratic planning, which is theoretically outlined in her publication Stadtkonflikte (2020). The central research question is, to what extent Heindl's planning approach can be understood as a radical-democratic theory and how conflict, participation and planning can be conceived and analysed as political categories within architectural practice. The work combines a discourse-analytical reading with a theory-driven contextualisation, moving between critical planning theory and radical democratic theory. For the analysis, a model is developed that differentiates political planning processes along three categories: conflict without participation, conflict with participation, and participation without conflict. It shows that for Heindl, architecture is a political task where conflict is seen as a fundamental part of democratic planning, and participation is a collective, powerful action. It also demonstrates that the combination of conflict and participation holds the greatest democratic potential. In this way, the thesis contributes to the theoretical and practical contextualisation of Gabu Heindl's work and emphasizes the current relevance of radical democratic planning for contemporary discourses in architecture and urban planning.
