Politische Partizipation bildet die Grundlage der Demokratie und umfasst Aktivitäten wie Wählen, Kandidieren sowie das Unterschreiben von Petitionen. Für MigrantInnen, eine wachsende Bevölkerungsgruppe in Europa, ist sie zentral für Gleichberechtigung und Repräsentation, wird jedoch häufig durch ethnische, sozioökonomische und staatsbürgerliche Barrieren eingeschränkt. Aktuelle Forschung betont, dass ortsbezogene Faktoren, etwa Gemeindegröße, Bevölkerungsdichte, institutionelle Rahmenbedingungen und soziale Netzwerke, diese Dynamiken wesentlich prägen. Diese Dissertation untersucht daher, wie „place“ die politische Partizipation von MigrantInnen in ländlichen Gebieten beeinflusst. Am Beispiel Italiens zeigt sie, dass der ländliche Kontext spezifische Formen der Partizipation hervorbringt, in denen informelle Praktiken und lokale Beziehungen oft wichtiger sind als institutionelle Kanäle. Methodisch basiert die Studie auf einer qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse von Interviews mit MigrantInnen, PolitikerInnen, SozialarbeiterInnen und Geistlichen aus neun ländlichen Gemeinden in Piemont, Latium und Kampanien sowie auf der Analyse rechtlicher Dokumente zu den Partizipationsrechten von MigrantInnen in Italien. Empirisch verdeutlicht die Arbeit, dass ortsbezogene Faktoren zentrale Treiber politischer Partizipation sind und religiöse Institutionen sowie lokale Persönlichkeiten bedeutende Räume für Anerkennung und Engagement bieten. Konzeptionell erweitert sie das Verständnis von Partizipation über formale Kanäle hinaus, indem sie alltägliche Praktiken und informelle Netzwerke einbezieht. Aus einer theoretischen Perspektive, entwickelt die Dissertation einen Rahmen, der „place“ als konstitutive Dimension politischer Zugehörigkeit begreift und dadurch neue Einsichten in das Zusammenspiel von Migration, Partizipation und Lokalität eröffnet.

Political participation constitutes the fundamental basis of democracy, including activities such as voting, petitioning, and running for office. For immigrants, a growing and significant demographic across Europe, participation is essential for ensuring equity and representation; however, these efforts are frequently hindered by factors such as ethnicity, socioeconomic disparities, and restrictive citizenship policies. Recent research suggests that these dynamics are profoundly affected by place-based factors, including community size, population density, institutional frameworks, and local social networks, which influence both institutional and non-institutional forms of participation. Building upon this premise, the primary research question of this dissertation is: How does place shape the political participation of immigrants in rural areas? This study expands the existing literature by demonstrating how rural context in Italy promotes distinctive forms of participation for immigrants, where informal practices and local relationships are prioritized over traditional institutional channels. Methodologically, the dissertation adopts a qualitative content analysis that integrates semi-structured interviews with immigrants, community leaders, clergy, and local stakeholders, alongside an examination of legal documents governing migrant rights to participation in Italy. Data was collected from nine rural areas in three Italian regions that differ significantly in their characteristics: Piedmont, Lazio, and Campania. This design captures both the lived experiences of immigrants and the institutional structures that shape their participation. Furthermore, this dissertation makes three main contributions. Empirically, it shows that place-based factors are fundamental drivers of rural political participation, with religious institutions and respected community figures providing essential spaces for recognition, inclusion, and engagement. Conceptually, it extends the understanding of political participation beyond institutional channels, emphasizing everyday practices and informal networks as materially significant. Theoretically, it proposes a novel framework for analyzing participation, positioning place as a constitutive dimension that influences opportunities, relationships, and the symbolic boundaries of belonging. This perspective offers new insights into the complex interplay between migration, participation, and place.
