Die Arbeit untersucht kritisch das Konzept der emanzipativen Selbstentfaltungswerte (ESW) und deren Operationalisierung im Emancipative Value Index (EVI) von Welzel und Inglehart. Im Zentrum steht die Diskrepanz zwischen kontinuierlich steigenden ESW‑Werten und zugleich zunehmenden antidemokratischen Entwicklungen in Europa. Die Analyse zeigt, dass die ESW‑Kategorien Autonomie und Mitbestimmung historisch prodemokratische Wirkungen entfalteten, heute jedoch ambivalente Effekte auf demokratische Prozesse haben. Strukturelle Vorbedingungen, kulturelle Individualisierung und moralischer Konformitätsdruck begrenzen ihre prodemokratische Wirkung. Der EVI erweist sich als zu normativ und unzureichend kontextualisiert. Deswegen wird eine Neu-Operationalisierung vorgeschlagen, die die ESW‑Kategorien Autonomie und Mitbestimmung präzisiert und um kollektive Dimensionen wie Gemeinwohlorientierung, Anerkennung und Respekt erweitert.

The thesis offers a critical examination of the concept of emancipative self-expression values (ESW) and their operationalization in Welzel and Inglehart’s Emancipative Values Index (EVI). It centres on the discrepancy between steadily rising ESW‑Scores and, simultaneously, mounting anti-democratic developments in Europe. The analysis shows that, while the ESW categories autonomy and voice/participation historically exerted pro-democratic effects, they now display ambivalent impacts on democratic processes. Structural preconditions, cultural individualization and moral conformity pressures constrain their pro-democratic force. The EVI proves overly normative and insufficiently contextualized. The study therefore proposes a re-operationalization that refines the ESW categories of autonomy and participation and expands them to include collective dimensions such as orientation to the common good, recognition, and respect.
