Die Studie in der vorliegenden Masterarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Interaktion und Interpretation mehrerer linguistischer Elemente in Pränominalposition einer Nominalphrase des modernen Englischs. Die Arbeit liegt im Bereich der kognitiv-funktionalen Linguistik, da angenommen wird, dass Sprache das Resultat und eine Manifestation des Denkens und der Konzeptionalisierung ist – dies ist ein wesentlicher Ansatz, der in den meisten Publikationen im Bereich der kognitiven Linguistik zu finden ist (z.B. Croft & Cruse 2004; Langacker 1987, 1991, und 2008; Radden & Dirven 2007). Basierend auf früheren Veröffentlichungen zu Modellen der Pränominalzone einer englischen Nominalphrase (Bache 1978; Breban 2010; Davidse & Breban 2019; Feist 2009; Ghesquière 2009, 2014; Quirk et al. 1995 [1985]), untersucht diese korpusbasierte (Corpus of Contemporary American English, Davies 2008-) Studie die schematischen Kombinationsmuster der verschiedenen Adjektivfunktionen in Form von Pränominalmodifikatoren – dies ist begrenzt auf Nominalphrasen der Struktur [(Primärer Determinierer) + Adj1 + Adj2 + Kopf der Nominalphrase]. Im Allgemeinen nimmt das vorliegende Projekt an, dass die Funktion des Adjektivs dessen Bedeutung auslöst, aber gleichzeitig das semantische Potential des Wortes selbst die möglichen Funktionen beschränkt. Mithilfe von Repräsentativwörtern für die jeweiligen Funktionen ist eine systematische Studie der Funktionskombinationen möglich. Die Studie ergab, dass, obwohl jegliche Kombinationen in der Theorie möglich sein sollten, nicht alle potenziellen Kombinationen gefunden wurden. Für manche Repräsentativwörter waren bestimmte Funktionskombinationen ungrammatisch, für andere wiederum sogar statistisch wahrscheinlich. Das Ergebnis für die meisten Repräsentativwörter hat gezeigt, dass die Grenzen zwischen den einzelnen Funktionen nicht klar gezogen werden können und in manchen Fällen sogar eine Abbildung der semantischen Veränderung des Wortes erkennbar ist. Des Weiteren werden die Interpretationsmuster der Funktionskombinationen, ein Forschungsgebiet, das in der bestehenden Literatur bisher wenig Aufmerksamkeit bekam, erforscht und abgebildet; jene Abbildungen gelten als eine Annäherung an die kognitiven Prozesse, die vonstattengehen, wenn eine Nominalphrase mit mehreren Pränominalelementen gelesen/gehört und entziffert wird.

This study investigates the interaction and interpretation of multiple prenominal elements in the modern-day English noun phrase. It is situated in the realm of cognitive-functional linguistics since it assumes language to be the result and manifestation of thought and conceptualization – an approach taken in the majority of publications concerned with cognitive linguistics (e.g., Croft & Cruse 2004; Langacker 1987, 1991, and 2008; Radden & Dirven 2007). Based on previous publications concerned with models of the prenominal zone in the English NP (Bache 1978; Breban 2010; Davidse & Breban 2019; Feist 2009; Ghesquière 2009, 2014; Quirk et al. 1995 [1985]), this corpus-based (Corpus of Contemporary American English, Davies 2008-) study explores the schematic combination patterns of the different adjectival functions of pre-head modifiers, limited to NPs of the structure [(Primary Determiner) + Adj1 + Adj2 + Head]. This project generally assumes that the function of the adjective triggers its meaning while the meaning potential of the word limits its potential functions. By employing representative words for each adjectival function in question, the schematic function combination can be explored and put into context. The results showed that, while every function combination might in theory be possible (cf., abovementioned studies), not all of them were encountered in the corpus. For some words, specific combinations are impermissible while others are likely to cooccur. The METADESIGNATIVE possible, for example, expresses not the feasibility of something but rather its probability of occurring, if preceded by a superlative (e.g., cheapest possible solution) the EPITHETICAL meaning of the word is triggered (i.e., cheapest solution feasible) rather than its METADESIGNATIVE one (as in possible side effects). The findings for most of the investigated words showed that the lines between individual functions are rather blurry but might, depending on each representative word, hint to pathways of semantic change. Different, as a SECONDARY DETERMINER, for example, may be intensified as in whole different issue or far different story. Despite “making the identifiability status of the referent more precise” (Davidse & Breban 2019: 351) and its synonymity to another, it still carries remnants of its EPITHETICAL meaning, i.e., ‘not like the other instances of X’. Finally, the interpretation pattern of the function combinations, something that has received little attention in the literature concerned with prenominal elements, were investigated and visualized; these depictions serve as an approximation to the cognitive procedures of processing the NPs.
