Abstract
(Deutsch)

Stratospheric coarse mode aerosols (with particle diameters Dp>0.5µm) play an important role for local Surface chemistry and Earth’s radiative balance. However, in situ measurements - especially in the polar stratosphere - are scarce. This thesis addresses this deficiency of in situ measurements by analyzing the dataset taken during the SABRE 2023 airborne campaign based at Eielson AFB in Alaska in February and March 2023. Aerosol size distribution and concentration are not expected to be uniformly distributed in the polar stratosphere due to the formation of the stratospheric winter polar vortex. This is a structure resulting from the Brewer-Dobson Circulation. The polar vortex leads to airmasses with different histories coexisting side to side on either edge of the vortex with little to no mixing. To distinguish between these two regimes in the dataset, an existing algorithm exploiting a vertical gradient in N2O concentration inside the vortex is improved, simplified and validated against age of air data. This algorithm is then used to partition the dataset into subsets of datapoints taken inside the vortex and outside the vortex. Thereafter, a comparative study on aerosol number size distribution and concentration between these two regimes is performed. The comparison revealed significant differences in coarse mode aerosol properties between the two regimes: While coarse mode number concentration was fairly uniform outside the vortex throughout the whole measured potential temperature range, the concentration inside decreased significantly at higher potential temperatures and even fell below the detection limit of the instrument when only considering particles with Dp>1µm. While the particle size distribution was fairly constant with potential temperature outside the vortex, there was a distinct vertical structure found inside the vortex with smaller particles (Dp∼80nm) at high potential temperatures and larger particles (Dp∼150nm) at lower ones. The mode with larger particles exhibited a much broader size distribution and lower maximum particle concentration. This suggests particle growth by condensation and coagulation on the descending branch of the Brewer-Dobson Circulation which leads to the unexpected result of larger coarse mode number concentrations in the lower stratosphere inside the vortex as compared to outside.
