Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This thesis analyses how agricultural productivity in a transition economy may react to accession to the European Union, using Bulgaria`s 2007 entry as a benchmark for developments in Moldova. The study applies the Synthetic Control Method and constructs a counterfactual path for Bulgaria`s agricultural performance based on non-EU transition economies. Cereal yield, measured as output per hectare, is the main outcome, while arable land as a share of total area is used to check whether yield changes are driven by land use. The results show that Bulgaria`s cereal yields remain above those of the synthetic control after accession, whereas changes in arable land are small. This pattern suggests that potential gains for Moldova will depend less on expanding cultivated area and more on domestic reforms, institutional capacity and effective use of agricultural support schemes.
