Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Internationalization has become an important avenue for SME growth, and several studies have been conducted to determine the elements driving this process. Drawing on Upper Echelons Theory, this study investigates whether international experience (IE) precedes cultural intelligence (CQ) and how CQ affects entry mode choice and international performance. The survey data from 87 SMEs from diverse countries and industries were examined using regression models with firm- and manager-level controls. The findings offer little to no evidence for the given hypotheses, showing that CQ may function as a contingent and temporally dependent capability, valuable but insufficient in isolation, and more likely to influence outcomes when combined with organizational resources and strategic preparation. The study adds to current theory by shifting focus away from the quantity of foreign exposure and towards the interpretation and integration of such experience, revealing the boundary circumstances under which CQ becomes practical in SME Internationalization.
