Abstract

Abstract

A well-connected, diverse, and high-quality green infrastructure in the ecosystem services is crucial for preserving biodiversity and providing ecosystem services. This study examines the connectivity and functionality of green infrastructure in the surrounding cultural landscape of the Thayatal Na-tional Park. To this end, quality, structural diversity, and connectivity were surveyed and quantita-tively evaluated on seven sample sites. The aim was to analyse correlations between Shannon’s Diversity Index, the Biotope Value, and the total functional value of the ecosystem services provid-ed. In addition, a Morphological Spatial Pattern Analysis and the calculation of edge density were carried out. The results demonstrate a significant correlation between high structural diversity, a high Biotope Value, and a wide range of ecosystem services. Particularly large core areas of green infrastructure promote the informational, functional and regulatory ecosystem services, while a high proportion of background areas has a predominantly negative effect. Linear semi-natural habitats proved to be particularly relevant for the connectivity of green infrastructure. They serve both as essential connecting elements and as refuges for rare species in intensively managed agricultural land-scapes. Due to their small size, the Thayatal National Park and the adjacent Czech Podyjí National Park are particularly dependent on semi-natural buffer zones to minimize edge effects and enable ecologi-cal corridors to other protected areas. For the surrounding area of the Thayatal National Park, it is therefore recommended to implement agricultural measures that promote biodiversity and to spe-cifically strengthened linear semi-natural habitats, with the long-term goal of enlarging the pro-tected area.
