Diese Masterarbeit untersucht, wie die Line of Control (LoC) und die Line of Actual Control (LAC) als umstrittene Demarkationen Indiens Machtverhältnisse und geopolitische Entscheidungen in Jammu und Kashmir sowie Ladakh prägen. Ausgehend von Nachwirkungen der Indo-Pakistanischen Teilung und kolonialen Kartographien und unter Einbezug wiederkehrender Grenzkrisen sowie jüngerer institutioneller Neuordnungen fragt diese Masterarbeit, wie Grenzlinien zu Instrumenten räumlicher Ordnung, Legitimation und Steuerung werden und welche Folgen dies für die regionale Stabilität hat. Methodisch basiert sie auf einer qualitativen, dokumentbasierten strategischen Diskursanalyse mit theoriegeleiteter Kodierung; Postkoloniale Theorie, Foucaults Macht/Wissen und Kritische Geopolitik bilden den Rahmen, Raumtheorie fungiert als Brücke. Die Analyse zeigt, dass Grenzpraktiken politische Räume diskursiv herstellen und über Sicherheits- und Entwicklungsnarrative normalisieren; dass Autorität über historische Erzählungen und verfassungs-administrative Routinen bestätigt und alternative Stimmen strukturell begrenzt werden; und dass Krisenepisoden die LoC/LAC symbolisch aufladen und innen- mit außenpolitischen Haltungen verketten. Die Arbeit versteht sich als begrenzte, theorieinformierte Annäherung, die Diskurs/Macht/Raum zusammenführt und eine strukturierte Einordnung indischer Strategien im Kontext Pakistan/China ermöglicht.

This thesis examines how the Line of Control (LoC) and the Line of Actual Control (LAC) operate as contested demarcations that shape India’s power relations and geopolitical decision-making in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Building on the legacies of Indo-Pakistani Partition and colonial cartographies, and considering recurrent border crises alongside recent institutional reorganisation, the study asks how border lines become instruments of spatial ordering, legitimation, and control, and with what implications for regional stability. Methodologically, it employs a qualitative, document-based strategic discourse analysis with a theory-led coding architecture. Postcolonial theory, Foucauldian power/knowledge, and critical geopolitics provide the theoretical frame, with spatial theory serving as a bridge. The analysis finds that bordering practices discursively produce political space and normalise exceptional governance through security and development narratives; that authority is affirmed through historical storytelling and constitutional-administrative routines while alternative voices are structurally constrained; and that crisis episodes symbolically re-inscribe the LoC/LAC, linking domestic ordering with external posture. The study presents a limited, theory-informed approach that brings discourse, power, and space together and enables a structured reading of India’s strategies in relation to Pakistan and China.
