Die Masterarbeit „Zukunft im Bestand“ befasst sich mit der Transformation von Leerstand im ländlichen Raum und untersucht, wie partizipative und transdisziplinäre Planungsprozesse zur Reaktivierung leerstehender Gebäude beitragen können. Ausgehend von theoretischen Ansätzen zur sozialen und kulturellen Raumproduktion werden Konzepte der Partizipation, Transdisziplinarität sowie baulichen und planerischen Leerstandsaktivierung im Rahmen einer Zukunftswerkstatt praktisch erprobt. Am Fallbeispiel des „Alten Gemeindeamts“ in Zellerndorf (Niederösterreich) werden in drei aufeinander aufbauenden partizipativen Phasen der bauliche und soziale Bestand analysiert sowie gemeinsame Zukunftsvisionen entwickelt. Diese wurden gemeinsam mit Architekt*innen als räumliche Transformationsszenarien ausgearbeitet und reflektiert. Am Ende der Zukunftswerkstatt wird deutlich, dass Leerstand mit zunehmender kollektiver Auseinandersetzung nicht primär als Problem, sondern als räumliche Ressource wahrgenommen wird. Partizipative und transdisziplinäre Prozesse tragen dabei nicht nur zur Entwicklung kontextsensibler Nutzungskonzepte bei, sondern fördern auch soziale Aushandlungsprozesse, lokales Wissen und eröffnen Potenziale für eine transformative Zukunft im Bestand.

The master’s thesis “Zukunft im Bestand” examines the transformation of vacant buildings in rural areas and explores how participatory and transdisciplinary planning processes can contribute to their reactivation. Building on theoretical approaches to the social and cultural production of space, concepts of participation, transdisciplinarity, and the architectural and planning-related activation of vacancy are empirically tested through the use of a Zukunftswerkstatt (future workshop). Using the former municipal building „Altes Gemeindeamt“ in Zellerndorf (Lower Austria) as a case study, the architectural and social conditions of the vacant property are analysed and shared future visions are developed in three consecutive participatory phases. In collaboration with architects, these visions are translated into and reflected upon as spatial transformation scenarios. The results of the future workshop demonstrate that, through increasing collective engagement, vacancy is no longer perceived primarily as a problem but rather as a spatial resource. Participatory and transdisciplinary processes thus not only contribute to the development of contextsensitive reuse concepts, but also foster social negotiation processes, local knowledge, and open up potentials for a transformative future of the existing built environment.
