Diese Masterarbeit widmet sich der Frage, welche Funktionen narrative Literatur in der Moralphilosophie, insbesondere in der Tierethik, einnehmen kann. Die Frage wird anhand der beiden Ansätze von Cora Diamond und Peter Singer beantwortet, die jeweils einen anderen Zugang zur narrativen Literatur aufweisen. Als wichtiger Referenzpunkt dient dabei die Strömung des „literary turn“, die sich narrativer Literatur für moralphilosophisches Denken zuwendet und eine Erweiterung der Disziplin der Moralphilosophie anstrebt. Mit Nora Hämäläinen (2015), die neun Charakteristika anbietet, die Denker:innen des „literary turn“ aufweisen, wird die Verwendung narrativer Literatur in der Moralphilosophie erläutert. Inwiefern sich die beiden Zugänge von Singer und Diamond unterscheiden, wird mittels einer Struktur der Kategorien „moralphilosophischer Zugang“ und „Subjektfokus“ untersucht, die die neun Merkmale Hämäläinens zusammenfassen. Was unter den Begriffen der „Narration“ und des „Narrativs“ zu verstehen ist, wird in Verweis auf David Velleman (2003) erläutert, der einen erhellenden Ansatz bietet, was das erklärende Potential von Narrativen ausmacht. Anhand der Auseinandersetzung von Diamond und Singer mit dem Roman The Lives of Animals des Literaturnobelpreisträges J. M. Coetzee wird der unterschiedliche Umgang mit Literatur in der Tierethik aufgezeigt. Dabei wird deutlich, inwiefern ein präsupponiertes Verständnis von Moralphilosophie die Funktionen bedingt, die die narrative Literatur einnehmen kann und dass sich Diamonds Zugang im Kontext der Tierethik als gewinnbringender erweist.

This Master’s Thesis explores the functions that narrative literature can undertake in moral philosophy – especially in animal ethics. This will be shown in the accounts of Cora Diamond and Peter Singer, who offer different perspectives on the role of literature. An important point of reference is the movement of the “literary turn”, which turns to narrative literature as a resource for moral-philosophical thinking and seeks to broaden the discipline of moral philosophy. Drawing on Nora Hämäläinen (2015), who identifies nine characteristics shared by thinkers of the “literary turn”, the thesis outlines how narrative literature is used within moral philosophy. The ways in which Singer’s and Diamond’s approaches differ are examined using a structure based on the categories “moral-philosophical approach” and “subject focus”, which summarize Hämäläinen’s nine characteristics. The concepts of “narration” and “narrative” are clarified with reference to David Velleman (2003), who offers an illuminating account of the explanatory potential of narratives. By analyzing Diamond’s and Singer’s engagement with the novel The Lives of Animals by Nobel Prize – winning author J. M. Coetzee, the thesis highlights their differing uses of literature within animal ethics. As a result, it becomes apparent that a presupposed understanding of moral philosophy shapes the functions that narrative literature can fulfil, and that Diamond’s approach proves to be more fruitful in the context of animal ethics.
