Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Present master thesis analyses art-fairs as spaces where international ambitious confronts institutional and economic realities of the local art-market. Despite the Vienna’s branding as one of the leading European artist and cultural centres, Austrian market takes the semi-peripheral position in the global art system. Based on the theoretical approaches of economic anthropology and anthropology of art worlds, the empirical research demonstrates that the declared internationality of Vienna's art fairs is primarily symbolic and performative. Although the fairs are positioned as international, at the level of practices—the structure of participants, audiences, and sales—they remain mainly local. This results in a phenomenon of apparent internationalisation, when international status serves as a tool for legitimising local practices without leading to sustainable transnational integration.
