Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This Master’s thesis examines the extent to which professional football clubs in the German Bundesliga can function as platforms for sustainability transition processes. The analysis begins by exploring the role of these clubs within multi-scalar constellations of actors and institutions. Building on this, the study focuses on two closely interrelated dimensions: (1) the key actors involved in sustainability-related activities and (2) the specific ecological priorities and measures pursued by professional football clubs. The theoretical framework is grounded in the concept of the Geography of Sustainability Transitions, which conceptualizes sustainability transitions as spatially embedded, relational, and multi-scalar processes. Methodologically, the study is based on a qualitative content analysis of publicly available sustainability reports published by German professional football clubs (cut-off date: 27 February 2025). The analysis is theory-driven, employing a deductive–inductive coding scheme and is conducted using the software MAXQDA. The findings indicate that professional football clubs can assume an intermediary platform function due to their societal reach, local embeddedness, and supra-regional as well as international connections. In doing so, they link diverse stakeholder groups, enhance the visibility of sustainability issues, and facilitate processes of exchange and learning. In practice, however, the implementation of sustainability initiatives is predominantly characterized by operational measures, particularly those addressing match-day and stadium operations. Strategic and governance-related approaches are present but remain limited in scope. Overall, the study demonstrates that German professional football possesses structural conditions that enable clubs to act as platforms for sustainability transition processes. Nevertheless, the actual effectiveness of this role largely depends on institutional frameworks, sector-specific requirements, and the degree to which these are bindingly designed and implemented by the clubs.
