Im Rahmen dieses Forschungsprojekts wurden die Assoziationen zwischen verschiedenen Affordanzen der community-basierten Content-Moderation auf der populären Plattform Reddituntersucht. Hierbei sollte herausgefunden werden, inwiefern die Affordanzen des Votings, der Festlegung community-spezifischer Regeln sowie die Anwendung von Löschungen als Moderationsmaßnahme mit dem System der Content-Moderation verbunden sind und in welchem Verhältnis diese zur Aufrechterhaltung antifeministischer (spez. maskulinistischer) Online-Communities auf der Plattform Reddit stehen. Als theoretische Grundlage wurde die Perspektive der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie eingenommen, um die Relevanz von menschlichen und nicht-menschlichen Akteuren gleichberechtigt in die Analyse mit einzubeziehen. Bezüglich der thematischen Ausrichtung der Communities und den von ihnen verwendeten Regelsystemen konnte kein signifikanter Zusammenhang entdeckt werden. In der Untersuchung der Voting-Affordanz innerhalb eines ausgewählten maskulinistischen Subreddits konnte ein Zusammenhang zwischen der Löschung von Postings durch den automatisierten Reddit-Filter oder der Community-Moderation und dem Voting-Score der Kommentare nachgewiesen werden. Ein leichter signifikanter Effekt zeigte sich außerdem zwischen dem Vorhandensein von gruppenidentitätsstörenden Inhalten in Kommentaren und deren Moderationsstatus. Für die Variablen des toxischen Verhaltens in Kommentaren und deren Löschung durch die Community-Moderation konnte kein signifikanter Zusammenhang gefunden werden. Die Ergebnisse verweisen auf eine erhaltende Rolle der community-basierten Moderation in Hinblick auf die Identität der Gruppe. Diese übernimmt hierbei demnach weniger die Funktion von Content-Moderation im normativen Sinne. Insgesamt konnte im Rahmen dieser Arbeit aufgezeigt werden, dass Reddits Affordanzen der Content-Moderation genutzt werden können, um den Erhalt maskulinistischer Communities zu stützen.

This research project is focused on analysing the association between different affordances of Reddit’s community-based mode of content moderation. The research questions were aimed at discovering whether certain affordances are used by moderators and users in order to regulate content within masculinist online communities on Reddit. The actor-network theory was used as theoretical framework in order to not only focus the analysis on human actors but also consider technical affordances as part of forming digital sociality and agency. The results of this project show no significant correlation between the community rules and specific community topics. There are however significant associations between the voting system that is used on Reddit and the moderation status of the analysed user-generated content. Comments that are removed by the community moderators or the automatic content filter tend to have significantly more downvotes than comments with a different availability status. There is also a small significant effect between content that contains language that could put the collective identity of the community at risk and the moderation status of those comments. Comments that are endangering for the group identity are removed significantly more often than contents that do not contain such language. There was no significant relation between comments containing toxic behavior and their moderation status. The results show that Reddit’s community moderation in the studied masculinist online community has a tendency to work as a stabiliser for the identity of the group rather than fulfil the role of a content moderation system from a normative perspective, which is more focused on reducing toxicity and harm in digital spaces. Therefore Reddit’s affordances of content moderation can be used to maintain masculinist online communities
