Abstract

The Qom Formation (QF) is considered as the northern Tethyan Seaway in Central Iran. This study examines the Early Miocene closure history of the Tethyan Seaway, which connected the Tethys and Indian oceans, as recorded in the Qom Basin of Central Iran. During this time, the seaway experienced a progressive, stepwise closure under changing climatic conditions, the timing and mechanisms of which are critical for reconstructing regional paleogeography, ocean circulation, and their broader implications for Neogene global climate. The upper part of this formation contains two members e and f. In this study the QF was investigated in the Dochah, Jujukzar, and Moreh Kuh sections. In the Dochah section, marls of member e are exposed, whereas in the Moreh Kuh section, limestones of member f are present. In the Jujuzkzar section, both members e and f are observable. Calcareous nannofossils and foraminifera biostratigraphy, sedimentology, elemental and isotope geochemistry, cyclostratigraphy, and mineralogy are used to reconstruct paleoenvironment, paleogeography, paleoecology, paleoclimate, and paleoceanography of the QF during the Burdigalian. Biozonation is conducted on the basis of calcareous nannofossils in the marls sediments of Dochah and Jujukzar localities, which led to determination of NN2/CNM4 (Discoaster druggii zone) and NN4/CNM6 (Sphenolithus heteromorphus zone). Erosive hiatus led to missing of NN3/CNM5 during middle Burdigalian. Evidence from nannofossils, stable isotopes, and cyclostratigraphy indicates a regional uplift-related hiatus lasting less than 900 kyr. Cyclostratigraphic analysis further reveals four 405 kyr cycles below the hiatus (base of the section at ~20.4 Ma) and eight 100 kyr cycles above it (base at ~17.687 Ma). According to larger benthic foraminifera, the QF belonged to SBZ 25. Eleven facies, grouped into five facies belts (lagoon, shoal, patch reef, mid ramp and basin) were recognized, which were deposited in a carbonate ramp. Four depositional sequences (BuQ1, BuQ2, BuQ3, and BuQ4) were identified, controlled by both eustasy and tectonism. Local tectonism played a major role in depositional characteristics and fauna diversity. Spatial variations in terrigenous input, inferred from facies characteristics and provenance data, indicate that active basement faulting during sedimentation segmented the basin into shallow platform (horst blocks) and deeper ramp (graben blocks) settings, which in turn resulted in the formation of an intrashelf basin in the region. The member e of the Qom succession in the Dochah locality includes diverse small benthic and planktonic foraminifera, deposited during the Burdigalian (NN2 and NN4). Based on calcareous nannofossils, benthic and planktonic foraminifera in the base of the member e (NN2) oxic conditions were governed, followed by an increase in productivity which exerted a positive influence on infaunal taxa (e.g. Uvigerina, Bulimina, Bolivina) and redox sensitive elements (Ba, P/Al, U/Al, Cd/Al). In the NN4 oxygen increased from base to top, led to blooming oxic taxa such as Cibicidoides and Heterolepa and a decrease in the redox sensitive elements. In addition, warming led to an increase of nannofossils like Discoasters and Sphenolithus during late Burdigalian. However, an increase in salinity, inferred from XRD data, stable isotopes in planktonic foraminifera, and oxygen isotopes in gypsum crystals, caused by tectonism and basin restriction, promoted deep marine evaporite formation (gypsum and halite) and episodic suboxic to dysoxic conditions, particularly at the base of the NN4 zone. During the MMCO (Miocene Climatic Optimum) at the top of the section, sea-level rise resulted in an increase of planktonic foraminifera, followed by the retreat of seawater from the Central Iran Basin and the influx of fluvial siliciclastic deposits due to tectonism activity. This study highlights the key mechanisms controlling the final stages of the Tethyan Seaway closure, emphasizing the interplay between regional tectonics and global climate. The results improve our understanding of how tectonic and eustatic processes jointly influence basin evolution in marginal marine settings.
