Diese Masterarbeit untersucht die Rolle von Emotional Labour bei Entscheidungsprozessen im simultanen Konferenzdolmetschen. Ausgangspunkt ist die Annahme, dass Dolmetscher:innen im Dolmetschprozess fortlaufend Entscheidungen treffen, die nicht ausschließlich kognitiv-rational, sondern auch emotional und sozial motiviert sind. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, zu analysieren, wie Dolmetscher:innen ihre Entscheidungen – insbesondere in Bezug auf inklusive Sprache, Hinzufügungen und Auslassungen – begründen und welche Bedeutung dabei wahrgenommene Erwartungen und Bedürfnisse anderer Akteur:innen, vor allem der Zuhörer:innen und Redner:innen, haben. Theoretisch stützt sich die Arbeit auf das Konzept der Emotional Labour nach Hochschild (2012/1979) sowie auf rollentheoretische Ansätze und Studien (z. B. Zwischenberger 2013), die soziale Erwartungen und Normen in den Fokus rücken. Methodisch basiert die Untersuchung auf retrospektiven Protokollen von sechs fortgeschrittenen Masterstudent:innen am Zentrum für Translationswissenschaft der Universität Wien. Die qualitative Auswertung dieser zeigt, dass Emotional Labour eine zentrale Rolle bei der Motivation und Begründung von Entscheidungen im Simultandolmetschprozess spielt. Insbesondere die Antizipation von Publikumsbedürfnissen, das Verkörpern der Intention der Redner:innen sowie die Regulierung eigener Gefühle erweisen sich als höchst bedeutend im Entscheidungsprozess. Die Ergebnisse unterstreichen die aktive Handlungsmacht von Konferenzdolmetscher:innen und verdeutlichen, dass Emotional Labour ein wesentlicher Bestandteil des Dolmetschprozesses ist.

This master’s thesis investigates the role of Emotional Labour in decision-making processes in simultaneous conference interpreting. It is based on the assumption that interpreters continuously make decisions during the interpreting process that are not solely motivated by cognitive and rational considerations, but are also shaped by emotional and social factors. The aim of the study is to analyse how interpreters justify their decisions – particularly with regard to inclusive language, additions, and omissions – and to examine the significance of perceived expectations and needs of other actors, especially audiences and speakers. The theoretical framework draws on Hochschild’s (2012/1979) concept of Emotional Labour as well as on role-theoretical approaches and studies (e.g. Zwischenberger 2013) that foreground social expectations and norms. Methodologically, the study is based on retrospective protocols collected from six advanced master’s students at the Centre for Translation Studies at the University of Vienna. The qualitative analysis of the protocols demonstrates that Emotional Labour plays a central role in motivating and justifying decisions in the simultaneous interpreting process. In particular, the anticipation of audience needs, the embodiment of speakers’ intentions, and the regulation of one’s own emotions emerge as highly significant factors in decision-making. The findings highlight the active agency of conference interpreters and illustrate that Emotional Labour constitutes an essential component of the interpreting process.
