Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract

This master’s thesis examines the science-skeptical arguments and patterns of argumentation advanced in support of voting for the AfD in Freyung, a small town in the Bavarian Forest in the tripoint region bordering Austria and the Czech Republic. Across the three most recent supraregional elections between 2023 and 2025 — the Bavarian state election, the European Parliament election, and the federal election — the constituency to which Freyung belongs consistently ranked among those with the highest AfD vote shares in all of Bavaria. Notably, the same region recorded a COVID-19 vaccination rate of nearly 94 percent — an indicator of a high level of public acceptance of scientific recommendations — despite the AfD’s vehement rejection of COVID-19 containment measures and vaccination campaigns. This apparent contradiction constitutes the study’s point of departure and points to a central finding: science skepticism follows its own local logic — trust is extended where it can be verified through personal relationships, and withdrawn where institutions are perceived as distant or politically steered. The study treats science skepticism as a central, though not the sole, explanatory strand; additional factors such as migration and socioeconomic deprivation are contextualised but remain outside the analytical focus. Drawing on lifeworld ethnography after Honer (1993) and constructivist Grounded Theory after Charmaz (2014), seven focused interviews, two of which were conducted as follow-up interviews in October 2025, along with approximately 60 informal field conversations, and extensive participant observation conducted in Freyung in September and October 2025 were analysed. The theoretical lens is provided by Benita Luckmann’s (1970a) concept of small lifeworlds, which anchors the analysis at the micro-level of everyday sense-making — and thereby addresses a gap left open by macro-sociological survey research on right-wing populism. The analysis answers the research question on three levels: an analytically configurative, a substantive, and a social-structural one. The core category of Reactive Autonomy describes how, under conditions of institutional estrangement, actors delegitimise external expertise and construct locally verifiable evidence in its place — not as a causal law, but as a theoretically saturated account of recurring configurations. Four argumentation patterns flesh out this core category: the argument of unacknowledged experience, the argument of moral illegitimacy, the argument from local evidence, and performative withdrawal as an electoral signal. An ideal-typical triad — the instrumental protester, the local autonomy pragmatist, and the epistemic gatekeeper — differentiates the social positions in which these patterns appear. Reactive Autonomy is not a homogeneous category; it takes different forms depending on the social position of its carrier — and it does not inevitably translate into an AfD vote: the material documents withdrawal into political apathy and programmatic activism as equally valid alternative configurations. Science skepticism in Freyung thus proves to be an active lifeworld achievement rather than a cognitive deficit: a strategy of sovereignty-preservation in a small town whose public spaces of moderation are eroding, and in which new small worlds — among them the AfD information stand as an informal omphalos — are partially assuming their function.
