Diese Masterarbeit analysiert die Medienberichterstattung zu Biogas in Österreich über einen Zeitraum von elf Jahren, von 2014 bis 2024. Insgesamt wurden 2670 Artikel aus neun nationalen und regionalen Zeitungen analysiert. Mittels Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) wurde eine Langzeit-Themenanalyse durchgeführt, die neun Hauptthemen identifizierte. Die qualitative Auswertung zeigt, dass sich die Berichterstattung im Zeitverlauf verändert und sich thematische Schwerpunkte verschieben. In den ersten Jahren ist die Berichterstattung stark projektbezogen, wohingegen später politische Themen und Energiesicherheit in den Vordergrund rücken. Während einige Themen über den gesamten analysierten Zeitraum hinweg präsent sind, treten andere, wie Politik, Politikgestaltung und Gesetzgebung sowie Energiesicherheit und Gesetzgebung, als Folge politischer und geopolitischer Entwicklungen in den Vordergrund. In einer nachfolgenden Phase wird Biogas oft als knapper, strategisch wichtiger Rohstoff, als „Champagner des Energiesektors“, dargestellt und regelmäßig im Kontext der Energiesicherheit diskutiert. Die Diskussion bleibt jedoch von Kritik begleitet, die sich im Laufe der Zeit weiterentwickelt. Während sich die frühe Medienberichterstattung vor allem auf die lokalen und regionalen Auswirkungen der Biogasproduktion konzentrierte, hoben spätere Berichte zunehmend die Rolle von Biogas innerhalb des gesamten Energiesystems hervor. Diese Darstellungen in den Medien prägen das Verständnis der Öffentlichkeit von Biogas und beeinflussen folglich dessen Akzeptanz und Nutzung in der Energiewende. Die Ergebnisse der Analyse zeigen, dass eine ausgewogene Politikgestaltung notwendig ist, um technische, wirtschaftliche, ökologische und soziale Aspekte des Biogassektors zu integrieren. Insbesondere das Erneuerbare-Gase-Gesetz verdeutlicht die Herausforderung, krisenfeste und flexible Rechtsvorschriften zu schaffen, wenn unterschiedliche Interessen aufeinanderprallen. Die qualitativen Ergebnisse werden methodisch unter Verwendung des Agency Structure, Institution, Discourse (ASID)-Modells analysiert.

This thesis examines the media coverage of biogas in Austria over eleven years, spanning from 2014 to 2024. A total of 2,670 articles from 9 national and regional newspaper outlets were analyzed. Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), a topic modeling approach, was used to conduct a longitudinal media analysis over the eleven-year timeframe. The analysis identifies nine main topics, including Policy, Politics & Legislation, Energy Security & Legislation, Energy Transition & Decarbonization, Technical Performance & Plant Operation, and five additional topics. The analysis examines regional differences in thematic focus as well as differences among national media outlets. While several topics are present across the whole analyzed timeframe, others like Policy, Politics & Legislation, and Energy Security & Legislation emerge as a result of political and geopolitical developments. A qualitative analysis of the top five newspaper articles per year and newspaper outlet shows how biogas is framed and contextualized in Austrian media discourse. The focus shifts from primarily project-specific reporting and communication that frames biogas as a technically innovative, decentralized, climate-friendly energy solution, while also reflecting local controversies and resistance, to a phase characterized by declining subsidies and regulatory and political uncertainty. In a subsequent phase, biogas is often framed as a scarce, strategically relevant resource, the “champagne of the energy industry,” and is regularly discussed in the context of energy security. The discourse, however, remains accompanied by critique, which has changed over time. While early media coverage was primarily characterized by a focus on the local and regional effects of biogas production, later media reporting increasingly criticized and discussed the role of biogas within the broader energy system. These media representations contribute to shaping the public understanding of biogas, and consequently its acceptance and use in the energy transition. The results of the analysis show that balanced policymaking is necessary in order to integrate technical, economic, environmental, and social aspects of the biogas sector. The Renewable Gas Act, in particular, highlights the challenge of creating crisis-resistant, flexible legislation when there are conflicting interests. The qualitative results are classified and analyzed methodologically using the Agency Structure, Institution, Discourse (ASID) model.
