Diese Masterarbeit analysiert den Einfluss von Multimodalität auf die Narratologie von Cartoon-Tagebüchern anhand der Romane Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2007) [Gregs Tagebuch – Von Idioten umzingelt] sowie The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (2007) [Das absolut wahre Tagebuch eines Teilzeit Indianers]. Beide Werke erfreuen sich großer Popularität und wurden bereits umfangreich wissenschaftlich untersucht, jedoch bislang nicht aus einer genrebezogenen multimodalen Perspektive. Neben der Multimodalität als methodologischem Rahmen stützt sich die Analyse auf das narratologische Konzept des französischen Literaturwissenschaftlers Gérard Genette, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die Erzählhaltung, verstanden als Zusammenspiel von Erzählstimme, Fokalisierung und Subjektivität, sowie deren konkrete Ausgestaltung in monomodalen Tagebuchromanen. Die Multimodalität in beiden Texten ergibt sich aus der Interaktion von geschriebener Sprache und cartoonspezifischen Zeichnungen. Auf dieser Grundlage erfolgt ein genrebezogenes vergleichendes Close Reading der beiden Romane. Die Analyse zeigt, dass Multimodalität das Genre signifikant prägt, insbesondere durch das Zusammenspiel innerer und äußerer Perspektiven, wenn die Tagebuchschreibenden im Fließtext eine autodiegetische Perspektive einnehmen und sich selbst zeichnerisch darstellen. Die konventionelle Erzählhaltung von Tagebuchromanen und ihre typische Unmittelbarkeit erweisen sich letztendlich als besonders dynamisch im multimodalen Kontext. Insgesamt lassen sich diese Effekte auf die multimodale Interaktion von berichtendem Erzählen und szenischem Darstellen sowie auf die spatio-temporalen Strukturierungen der Texte zurückführen. Die Arbeit zeigt somit, dass Multimodalität über eine rein illustrative Funktion hinausgeht und als konstitutives Element die narratologischen Strukturen und Bedeutungskonstruktion dieses Genres wesentlich mitgestaltet.

This thesis analyzes the narratological implications of multimodality in the genre of cartoon-diaries based on the two works Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2007) and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (2007). These novels are highly popular examples of this genre and have been widely discussed in research, although never from a genre-based multimodal perspective. In addition to multimodality as a framework, the analysis draws on narratological categories developed by the French literary theorist Gérard Genette, in particular in relation to narrative stance, understood through the interplay of narrative voice, focalization, and subjectivity, as well as their specific configuration in monomodal diary narration. With regard to their multimodality, cartoon-diaries are constituted by the interaction of verbal written language and cartoony imagery. On this basis, a close reading of the two novels was conducted within a genre-sensitive comparative framework. The analysis shows that multimodality significantly shapes the genre, particularly by opening up an interplay between internal and external perspectives, when the diarist maintains an autodiegetic voice in the running text and visually constructs him:herself in the cartoons. Thus, narrative stance and its characteristic immediacy typical of monomodal diary narration appear more dynamic in the multimodal format. Overall, these effects can be traced back to the multimodal interaction between telling and showing, as well as the spatial and temporal organization of the multimodal text. This thesis demonstrates that multimodality is not merely a form of illustration in cartoon-diaries, but a constitutive element that reshapes their narratological structure and meaning-making processes.
