Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This master’s thesis examines the use of persuasive language in the Instagram marketing of celebrity-owned wellness brands, drawing on Cialdini’s (1984) six principles of persuasion. Building on the research of Morady Moghaddam and Esmaeilpour (2023), the thesis analyses 134 Instagram posts from the wellness brands Lemme, WelleCo and Sourse. The posts are systematically categorised according to the six principles – ‘reciprocity’, ‘scarcity’, ‘authority’, ‘commitment and consistency’, ‘liking’ and ‘consensus and social proof’ – and additionally examined using rhetorical and linguistic micro-strategies. The study combines approaches from persuasion research, rhetoric, discourse analysis and social media marketing to examine how language contributes to persuasive communication in the digital wellness industry. The findings of this thesis show that the principle of ‘liking’ is the dominant persuasive principle in the dataset examined and frequently supports other principles. Brands predominantly use emotionally appealing, humorous and aesthetically positive language to evoke pleasant associations with their products and brand identities. Authority is often constructed through references to wellness expertise, scientific terminology and health-related claims. The study also argues that Instagram, as a platform, favours persuasive communication that is particularly geared towards approachability, entertainment and emotional connection.
