Diese Arbeit untersucht die Repräsentation Australiens in österreichischen Englischschulbüchern. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Darstellung der Indigenen Kulturen Australiens. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die kulturellen Inhalte dreier Schulbücher, und beleuchtet, welche kulturellen Themen am vorherrschendsten sind, sowie die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen den Materialien. Zunächst wird eine Inhaltsanalyse auf der Grundlage des 4P Modells von Kultur (Yuen, 2011) durchgeführt, um kulturelle Inhalte in die vier Kategorien products, practices, persons und perspectives zu kategorisieren. Diese quantitative Analyse ermöglicht einen systematischen Vergleich der vorherrschenden kulturellen Themen. Zusätzlich wird eine Kritische Diskursanalyse basierend auf van Leeuwens (1996) framework of social actor representation durchgeführt. Anhand dieses Konzepts werden Texte und Bilder der Schulbücher analysiert, um zu untersuchen wie die Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples dargestellt werden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Darstellungen Australiens in österreichischen Englischschulbüchern weitgehend durch oberflächliche kulturelle Inhalte charakterisiert sind, wobei der Schwerpunkt stark auf tourismusbezogenen Bildern liegt. Im Gegensatz dazu sind komplexere und vielfältigere kulturelle Perspektiven oft unterrepräsentiert oder fehlen gänzlich. Die Analyse zeigt ferner, dass die Darstellung der Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples auf vereinfachte Darstellungen von traditionellen Lebensweisen begrenzt ist. Diese Ergebnisse sollen Lehrbuchautor:innen und Verlagen als wertvolle Grundlage dienen, um stereotype und postkoloniale Darstellungen in kultureller Repräsentation zu reduzieren.

This thesis explores the representation of Australia in Austrian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) coursebooks, with a particular focus on the portrayal of Australian Indigenous cultures. It investigates the cultural content presented in three Austrian EFL textbooks and examines which cultural themes are most prominent, as well as similarities and differences across the materials. First, a content analysis based on the 4P model of culture (Yuen, 2011) is used to categorize and quantify cultural content into the four categories products, practices, persons and perspectives. This allows for a systematic comparison of dominant cultural themes. Second, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), drawing on van Leeuwen’s (1996) framework of social actor representation, is applied to selected textual and visual data in order to examine how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are represented in greater depth. The findings indicate that representations of Australia in Austrian EFL coursebooks are largely characterised by surface-level cultural references, with a strong emphasis on tourism-related imagery. In contrast, more complex and diverse cultural perspectives are often underrepresented or absent. The analysis further reveals that the representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples frequently relies on limited and simplified representations, reducing them to only living a traditional way of life. These results should serve as a valuable input for textbook authors and publishers in order to reduce stereotypical and postcolonial narratives in cultural representations.
