Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
William Blake’s painting, conventionally titled The Arlington Court Picture was discovered in 1947 and constitutes one of the most enigmatic works within the artist’s corpus. Produced only a few years prior to Blake’s death in 1821, it initially appears as a striking anomaly within his late oeuvre, as it is understood to consist of a constellation of classical motifs that is mostly rare within his overall body of work. After several attempts to clarify the content of the work, most notably by George Wingfield Digby, Kathleen Raine, and Christopher Heppner, whose respective studies converge on a Neoplatonic matrix underlying its visual motifs, it has been assigned various titles, including Vision of the Circle of the Life of Man and The Sea of Time and Space, while a related design, which appears to function as the prototype for this composition, bears the title The River of Oblivion, thereby offering a guiding reference to the otherwise elusive subject of the representation. Building upon the aforementioned studies, as well as others concerning Blake’s inscrutable image, the present thesis seeks to interpret this enigmatic work through the method of metaphorology, as proposed by Hans Blumenberg and later systematized in the Wörterbuch der philosophischen Metaphern by Ralf Konersmann, treating it as a visual manifestation of a long-attested cluster of Neoplatonic philosophical metaphors. The master thesis aims to advance the interpretation of The Arlington Court Picture within Blake studies by addressing research questions concerning Blake’s engagement with Neoplatonism and the role of metaphorology within the discipline of art history.
