Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This Master’s thesis examines the extent to which ideological positions expressed in the political speeches of MEP Marc Botenga are reproduced, altered or reframed by the German simultaneous interpretations in the EP. The central question is how ideologically coloured assessments, attributions of blame and political stances are conveyed under the conditions of simultaneous interpreting, and what forms of translational shifts occur in the process. This thesis builds on discussions in translation studies concerning ideology, neutrality and the role of interpreters in political communication processes. Although ideological influences have already been extensively studied in translation studies, there has been comparatively little empirical research to date on political simultaneous interpreting within the institutional context of the EP. In particular, there is a lack of a study that systematically links current geopolitical crisis discourses with the tools of the Vienna CDA and approaches from the field of interpreting studies. This thesis addresses this research gap. The theoretical framework is based on the Viennese CDA as outlined by Reisigl (2007), concepts from translation studies relating to ideology in interpreting – in particular the study by Bartłomiejczyk (2022) – and ‘Appraisal Theory’ as proposed by Martin and White (2005). Methodologically, the study is based on a qualitative analysis of eight French-language speeches by MEP Marc Botenga from 2022 to 2026. The corpus comprises speeches on the war in Ukraine, the Gaza conflict, the situation in Iran and transatlantic relations between the United States and the EU. The original speeches were compared with their German simultaneous interpretations and analysed using selected categories from the Vienna CDA, ‘Appraisal Theory’ and the typology of translational shifts according to Bartłomiejczyk (2022). The results show that MEP Marc Botenga’s ideological positions are predominantly preserved as ‘close renditions’ in the interpretations. At the same time, there are occasional instances of weakening, strengthening, omissions and reframing that influence the ideological profile of individual statements. Such shifts are particularly frequent in passages containing strongly evaluative language, moral attributions of blame, oppositional constructions of ‘us’ and ‘them’, and explicit criticism of political actors and power structures. The analysis illustrates that simultaneous interpreting does not merely convey political positions, but can, in individual cases, recontextualise them and alter their intensity. The results suggest that simultaneous interpreting cannot be regarded as a completely neutral form of transmission. Rather, linguistic, institutional and situational factors influence the interpreting process. This study thus contributes to research into the ideological dimensions of political interpreting and highlights the importance of interpreters as discursive actors within multilingual political communication spaces.
