Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This work develops two super-potential methods for solving the screened Poisson equation (−∆ + κ2)u = ρ in free space with compactly supported, smooth source density. Both methods replace the convolution with the Yukawa kernel, which is singular at the origin, by the convolution with a more regular surrogate kernel that is bounded at the origin. The Mixed-Screened approach obtains the solution by applying the Laplace operator to a super-potential, the Double-Screened approach by applying the screened operator. The evaluation is based on separable Gaussian-sum approximations of the kernels and an FFT-based convolution followed by spectral operator application, where a one-time precomputation is separated from the actual solution phase. For both approaches, an a priori error estimate is derived whose kernel approximation component contains a near-field contribution of order O(ε3) and which additionally contains a discretization term that decays with the grid size for smooth densities. In the Double-Screened approach, the transformed integrand is analytic and double exponentially decaying on both sides, so that a standard sinc quadrature error bound is directly applicable and a more favorable number-of-terms asymptotics results. In the Mixed- Screened approach, the double exponential decay at the left boundary is absent, which is why a manual error decomposition is required. The methods are examined on test problems with known exact solution, including Gaussian, anisotropic, compactly supported, and oscillating sources as well as a variation of the screening parameter. At the finest grid size examined, N = 128, both approaches achieve relative ℓ∞-errors near machine accuracy in most benchmark configurations, and nearly coinciding accuracy at identical configurations. In the considered variation of the screening parameter, the accuracy remains stable. The Double-Screened approach requires fewer Gauss terms in the majority of cases and achieves shorter mean solve times for most configurations. This work thereby transfers the super-potential principle, formulated for the Poisson equation, to the screened operator and supplements it with two explicit kernel constructions together with the associated error theory depending on the screening parameter.
