Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This thesis does not examine Jodorowsky's therapeutic practice of Psychomagic but rather its aesthetic realization in his film Santa Sangre (1989). Psychomagic is understood as an aesthetic program that translates ritual actions, alchemical transformation, and Artaudian cruelty into a cinematic imagery. Drawing on an interdisciplinary framework of play and ritual theory (Huizinga, Turner, Schechner, Douglas), alchemy, Artaud's Theater of Cruelty, depth psychology (Freud, Jung), and critical theories of power (Foucault, Han), an analytical methodology is developed. Its application to Santa Sangre reveals that the film functions as a meta-psychomagic ritual: it radicalizes the cathartic potential of theater through alchemical transformation and Artaud's aesthetics, while simultaneously deconstructing the power structures inherent in it. The analysis of the film's character constellation, narrative structure, and liminal spaces (circus, church, theater) shows Santa Sangre as a critical reflection of psychomagic principles: it stages the ambivalences between liberation and subjugation, healing and violence – and demonstrates that the destruction of guru-like authority is a condition for possible emancipation. At the same time, problematic aspects become visible: the reproduction of binary gender stereotypes, colonial appropriation, and the instrumentalization of shamanic motifs. This thesis makes a contribution to the theater studies and critical-theoretical analysis of Jodorowsky's film aesthetics. It argues for the necessity of an ethical reflection on such borderline phenomena between art and therapy – particularly where liberation itself risks becoming a trap.
