Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Non-formal education has developed into a flexible educational field that responds to the limitations of formal systems while orienting its practices towards participants’ interests, experiences, and needs. Community-based artistic and cultural settings, such as community theatre initiatives or interactive exhibitions, are frequently discussed as educational environments that emphasise participation, aesthetic practice, and engagement. Approaching non-formal educational contexts through the German concept of Bildung raises important questions about how educational processes unfold through participation. Bildungsmomente are understood as situated moments within these ongoing processes, embedded in the present while remaining connected to past experiences and future possibilities. To study Bildungsmomente, this thesis adopts a performative perspective, approaching participation as a performative process through which meanings, interactions, and educational experiences are continuously brought into being. Performativity draws attention to how these processes are enacted in relation to one another, allowing Bildung to be understood as unfolding in and through participation itself. Although research on Bildung from a performative perspective and on participation in non-formal educational contexts share important theoretical insights into Bildungsmomente, these perspectives have remained only partially connected. In particular, the emergence of Bildungsmomente has rarely been reconstructed empirically as an unfolding process within concrete participatory situations. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to examine how Bildungsmomente emerge through participation pathways in an interactive exhibition. Participation pathways are understood as analytically reconstructed trajectories that make participation-related processes traceable as they unfold over time and provide a process-oriented way to analyse how Bildungsmomente emerge within and across these pathways. The empirical investigation was set in the interactive exhibition "Intercultural Threads" in Győr, Hungary, which invited visitors to explore the theme of interculturality through guided tours, interactive installations, and free exploration. The exhibition offered participants various opportunities to engage with stories, exhibition elements, and one another. The study follows a constructivist grounded theory methodology. Accordingly, the research design was emergent, allowing the analytical focus to develop through engagement with the empirical material. Data collection was conducted during four guided exhibition events using participatory observation and post-visit open-ended questionnaires. Data analysis followed the iterative principles of constructivist grounded theory through coding, constant comparison, continuous memo writing, and the conceptual development of analytical constructs and the pathway framework. The findings show that Bildungsmomente emerge through relational, situated, and pathway-specific configurations of participation. Their emergence can be reconstructed through the interplay of pathway-affording elements, pathway processes, and process dimensions, and remains embedded in participation itself. Across participation pathways, Bildungsmomente appear as shifts in how participants relate to others, themselves, or the world. They may involve multiple interconnected significant moments, unfold gradually, become articulated retrospectively, or remain open beyond participation itself. Novelty appeared in multiple forms across pathway-affording elements, deriving its meaning from how participants engaged with it, and was repeatedly connected to the emergence of Bildungsmomente. No specific pathway process could be identified as necessary for the emergence of Bildungsmomente; rather, Bildungsmomente tend to emerge through the qualities that characterise the dominant interplays of the particular participation pathway. By coordinating the conceptual contribution of Bildung theory, the interpretive lens of the performative perspective, and the methodology of constructivist grounded theory, this thesis provides an empirically grounded understanding of how Bildungsmomente emerge through participation in an interactive exhibition. In doing so, it shifts attention from viewing participation merely as the context of Bildung towards understanding it as the process through which Bildung comes into being.
