Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The commodification of social work is not discussed solely in social science journals in general, but also in social journals which are addressing social pedagogues directly. Task of the present thesis is to illuminate the discussions that took place in the Austrian socio-scientific journal "Erziehung Heute" between 1990 and 2004. The journal analysis examines, on the one hand, the influence of the commodification of social spheres on the discussions about target groups, responsibilities, policies and the path of acting by social workers. On the other hand, the analysis of "Erziehung Heute" also explores the impact of current procurement of socio-services to the discussions in the journal. The analysis shows that the debate about commodification was conducted in a very ambivalent way. There are definitely hopes that the commodification will bring more diversity and flexibility to the social work, and that this development will also lead to a liberation from bureaucratic constraints and to a deeper engagement with the problems of the users of social services. On the other hand there is fear that educational interventions become technocratic because of the influence of privatization and liberalization trends. On a related note, some analyzed articles report about reductions of the depth of socio-care interventions and about the exclusion from the support services of those in need because of cost pressure. For the socio-educational theory and practice, this raises the task either to repel or to transform the commodification of social work into forms, which seem to make sense from a pedagogical point of view.
