Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The title of my diploma thesis is “Feux Rouges: A road movie à la française.” The first part of the thesis is a theoretical part in which it is an attempt to explore the origins as well as the evolution of the road movie genre, which took place in the U.S. of the late 1960s. Here the focus is on decisive factors such as the Beat Generation, Jack Kerouac’s novel On the road, the New Hollywood and the genres precursor, the western, are being discussed. Additionally, the European and especially the French road movie tradition are presented in this first part. Furthermore it is questioned to what extent and most notably why these traditions distinguish each other from the U.S. road movie. The second part of the thesis is designed to analyse the French road movie Feux Rouges. Starting with an introduction of its director, Cédric Kahn, his work and the films actors, follows an analysis concerning the narrative structure, the representation of space and the affinity as well as the references to other genres, directors or films. Afterwards, three sequences of Feux Rouges are closely analysed. Each one of those three sequences represent a certain phase of travel: departure, passage and arrival. The analysis of the sequence “Exposition”, in which the protagonists leave Paris for the south of France focuses on the representation of the city as a space of confinement, norms, routine and finally threat. Furthermore the introduction of the protagonists is discussed. The analysis of the second sequence “Ride with the Devil” devotes itself with an essay from the film critic Pascal Bonitzer, “La vision partielle” – on the question in what way the space on-screen as well as off-screen is used to create tension. The analysis ends with the third sequence “The day after”. It deals with the question of the films ending and in which way the director desribes the return and reintegration of the protagonist back into society, a moment that constitutes a typical and traditional ending in road movies.
