Diese Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit den Themen Tourismus und Umwelt auf Koh Tao, einer etwa 21km² großen Insel in Südthailand. Diese Insel hat sich im Laufe der letzten 50 Jahre von einer Gefängnisinsel für politische Strafgefangene hin zu einem touristischen Zentrum für TaucherInnen aus der ganzen Welt entwickelt. Durch diese touristische Entwicklung hat sich Koh Tao stark verändert und im Zuge dieser Arbeit soll die Frage erläutert werden, welche sozialen und ökologischen Veränderungen durch den zunehmenden Tourismus auf Koh Tao stattgefunden haben und wie die lokale Bevölkerung mit diesen Veränderungen umgeht.
Durch eine auf Koh Tao durchgeführte Feldforschung, welche sowohl qualitative Forschungsmethoden, als auch die teilnehmende Beobachtung beinhaltete, wurden negative Folgeerscheinungen des Tourismus aufdeckt, welche zusammen mit den Projekten einiger sozialer Organisationen in dieser Arbeit angeführt werden. Diese Organisationen treten alle für eine nachhaltige touristische Entwicklung auf der Insel ein, vor diesem Hintergrund ist es entscheidend diese Art von Entwicklung genauer zu definieren und aufzuzeigen, wie Koh Tao eine solche erreichen kann. Durch die zusammenhängende Entwicklung und Koh Taos räumlicher Nähe mit Koh Samui und Koh Phangan, ist auch deren touristische Entwicklung in diese Arbeit eingeflossen.
Die Arbeit wurde grob in zwei Abschnitte gegliedert. Erster schafft eine theoretische Basis in den Themenbereichen Tourismus und Umwelt und der zweite Teil ist der praktisch orientierte, welcher auf Südthailand und im Speziellen auf Koh Tao eingeht.

This diploma thesis deals with tourism and environment on the island, Koh Tao. The island covers an area of about 21km² and is located in the south of Thailand. Within 50 years Koh Tao transformed itself from a prison island into a tourist attraction for scuba divers from the whole world. The natural scenery and population structure on Koh Tao changed due to tourist developments. On this account this thesis will clarify which social and ecological changes took place and how the local population deals with the new situation on the island.
Through field work on Koh Tao - which included qualitative research methods and participatory observation - negative after-effects have been discovered. These after-effects result from the increased tourism on Koh Tao. In this thesis they will be discussed in conjunction with projects from local non-profit organisations. These organisations work for sustainable tourist development on Koh Tao. To help sustainable tourist development it is important to define this kind of development and point out how such a sustainable development can be reached on Koh Tao. Due to similar developments and the regional proximity, experiences from the islands, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan will be made use of in this thesis.
This thesis is divided into two parts: In the first part the theoretical base for the main arguments will be laid and in the second part the situation in Southern Thailand and on Koh Tao will be examined critically.
