Der Dokumentarfilmemacher Frederick Wiseman wendet bei der Strukturierung seiner Filme eine spezifische Methode an. Die Verbindung zwischen der Struktur seiner Filme und seiner Konzentration auf soziale Institutionen wurde von der bisherigen Literatur zu seinem Werk ausgeblendet. Basierend auf den Thesen zu Wisemans Mosaikstruktur in Bill Nichols Buch Ideology an the Image (1981) wird in dieser Arbeit der Fokus auf die verschiedenen Aspekte von Kommunikation in den sozialen Einrichtungen gelegt, die Wiseman gefilmt hat. Dadurch, dass er eine Chronologie vermeidet, nicht nur einem Charakter über eine längere Zeit hinweg verfolgt und verschiedene Begegnungen abbildet, kreiert er eine multiperspektivische Sicht auf die Kommunikationsprozesse innerhalb der Institutionen. Seine Mosaikstruktur erzeugt eine Neuanordnung der auf Dialoge basierenden Geschehnisse und ist zur gleichen Zeit eine präzise Abbildung der Interaktionen zwischen den KlientInnen und ArbeiterInnen an diesen Orten. Die Struktur korrespondiert mit der Komplexität der Kommunikationsvorgänge, da die vielschichtigen Ausdrucksformen innerhalb der Insitutionen nicht durch ein Festhalten an einem einzelnen Charakter oder eines einzelnen Handlungsstranges vermittelt werden können.

The documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman has a particular method of structuring his films. However the specific connection between the structure of his films and his concentration on social institutions was disregarded in the existing literature about his opus. Based on the theses about Wiseman's mosaic structure by Bill Nichols in his book Ideology and the Image (1981) this work focuses on the different aspects of communication within the social institutions he filmed. By omitting chronology, by not following a single character over a longer period of time and by displaying many different encounters he creates a multi-perspective view on processes of communication within the institutions. His mosaic structure causes a rearrangement of dialogue based actions and is at the same time a concerted image of what actually happens in the interactions between the workers and clients of these places. The structure corresponds with the complexity of the procedures of communications because the multilayered forms of expressions within the institutions can't be treated with the often used way of following one determined individual or one certain plot.
